THE SOURCES

The Illustrated Historical Universal Ampelography brings together a total of 551 plates, accompanied by descriptive sheets for each of the illustrated wine varieties.

At the heart of the initiative is Ampélographie – Traité général de viticulture by Viala and Vermorel, compiled between 1901 and 1910, which comprises 497 plates accompanied by respective data sheets, for which the editors of this work translated the original texts faithfully, reproducing the most important aspects.

In order to give ample space to the Italian wine varieties, this work also comprises the plates taken from the Pomona Italiana and the Ampelografia Italiana. The Pomona Italiana was published in 1839; a work which was began by its author, Count Giorgio Gallesio, in 1817. One section is devoted to grapes, with 26 plates illustrating Italian wine varieties, accompanied by detailed technical sheets, which are reported here, following the original text.

The Ampelografia Italiana was published in 1882 under the care of the Ampelographic Committee of the Ministry for Agriculture and brings together 28 national wine varieties, with their respective plates and descriptions, also brought here in accordance with the original text.
